Two Teams, Two Wins.

Writer's picture: Pickle RickPickle Rick

Bloomfield kicked off the season with a game vs Manawatu-Foxton and our second team played Boys High 3rd XI. With quite a few guys out injured or unavailable and also our first time fielding 2 teams it was going to be an interesting round.

Asbestos Surveys Bloomfield vs Manawatu-Foxton at Coronation Park North.

Bloomfield won the toss and with Gary Francis injured, Damian (Dei Hamo) Schilling took his place opening the bowling. He got things off to a good start by removing Michael Knight and then Ben McKelvie got the wicket of Scott Findlayson at the other end. Things then swung back in Manfox’s favour with Marty O’Brien and Luke Kidby putting together a strong 42 run partnership. With the bowling starting to get a bit loose and the occasional miss-field, things were starting to slip away from us. The short boundaries were countered by the long grass which led to a run out opportunity that Craig Trim capitalised on with an exceptional throw from the boundary to find Luke Kidby short of his ground, run out for a well-earned 32.

Brendon Mudford tried to launch a revival with a quick 34 off 38 but wickets kept falling at the other end. The resurgence was halted when Brendon was run out by another Craig Trim feilding exploit and some exceptional wicket keeping from Jamie (lazerJet) Print. Bryn Earle and Craig Dawson then came back to bowl and took the remining wickets. Manfox all out for 137.

The toss.

The second innings got off to a mixed start for us with the bat with stand-in opener Ben McKelvie playing his usual, boring, defensive game and Warren (Trimmy) Trim trying to hit the skin off the ball at the other end. After hitting one big 6 Trimmy was bowled for 13 which then brought Anthony (Antz) Cliff to the crease. The runs then started to flow. Antz scored quickly at one end while Ben did his best to not get out. They (mainly Antz) put together a 42 run partnership before Antz hit one from Jack Brown straight to Craig Collis at midwicket. Craig Trim then came to the crease and hit a few boundarys before Ben was bowled by Jack Brown. Wickets then started to fall with Craig running himself out and Bryn hitting one to Michal Knight from Jack Browns bowling. An injured Gary Fancis then joined Lazerjet at the crease to see out the remainder of the innings. Lazer then hit a swashbuckling 34 off 33 and Gary finished it off helping some wayward bowling on its way to the fence.

Bloomfield running out the winners by 5 wickets in the 29th over.

Post match beers.

Accelerate Automotive Bloomfield vs PNBHS 3rd XI at Wallace Park.

Losing the toss was not the ideal way for our new team to begin its season but being put in to field first made up for it. Starting with a warm up of high catches, things were not looking great for this fresh team with plenty of dropped catches and miss-judging where the ball was going. Needless to say this didn't inspire confidence.

First up with the ball Jason was handed the honours of bowling the first over of the season and what a start it was, with the over only going for 2 runs but also getting a superb run out of one of the opening batsmen Kieran Gill by Zach. From there, the rest of bowlers kept the wickets flowing with Oliver Murray snicking one through to Baz off Corey’s second over and Jason then coming back on to bowl Jacob Duker for 0.

Chris Bishop then came on to bowl an incredible delivery that managed to get the much needed wicket of the great Matthew Rowe after a well-earned 20 off 54. Steven Rowlett, Zach Perry-Johnson and Sukhjeet Singh all showed good intent with the ball and will be ones to watch over the rest of the season. All the wickets were shared throughout the bowlers with 3 for Steven, 3 for Corey and 1 each for Zach, Chris and Jason.

PNBHS 3rd XI bowled out in the 36th over for 112. Should be a simple chase....

It wasn’t.

Having had great success at Wallace Park in the past, Jason and Chris opened the batting. Things did not go well as Chris feathered the last ball of the first over off Kieran Gill to The keeper, then Jason tried to (responsibly) go to boom town first ball of Oliver Murray’s spell, completely mishitting it to be caught at mid-on. We were 2 down by the start of the second over for no runs.

We like to do things properly so if we were going to have a bad start we may as well make a decent job of it. Campbell was the next to go, bowled by Kieran Gill for 0 and Blair tried swinging across the line at a straight one to deliver it to cow corner, only for his middle pin to go cart wheeling behind him.

Zach then strutted out to the middle and was looking good, until Corey called him through for a quick (unnecessary) single which landed Zach run-out, well done skip. This then bought Baz (Zachs old man) to the middle. Baz gave Corey some advice, politely letting him know about his stupidity the ball before, and they then set about chasing down this total. By waiting for the bad balls and trying their hardest to not swing for the short boundaries of Wallace Park the slowly accumulated runs. Corey batted through to make 41 off 83 balls only to be caught on the boundary to trying to finish the game early off Rory Trotter. Baz and Sukh finished the innings off in style with Baz hitting a 6 into the trees to chase down the total of 112.

31 off 65 for Baz, well done chap. Kieran taking 3 wickets and 1 each for Oliver Murray and Rory Trotter.

Best outcome at the end of day for the new team and no better way to start a season than having a win under the belts. Plenty of work to be done between games, but all is looking positive for the lads

Accelerate Automotive Bloomfield
