Saturday 15th of October- Round 1

Metalfold Industries Bloomfield P3 VS Maw Haws

Please bear with me in writing this as I haven’t yet figured out how to access the ball by ball scoring records our lovely new scoring system must surely have. I shall endeavour to take you on a fantastical journey to our first game of the season using both a very basic scoresheet and my erratic mind.

After a very quiet pre-season our cricket season was to kick off against last year’s P3 winners Maw Haws. Being the only theme to beat them last year we felt we would have a pretty good chance of doing the same this year. The big difference from this year to last was that only 4 players that were in that giant killing XI were playing today.

Our new captain Corey Bary (Trout) won the toss and decided to have a bowl. The modern classic opening duo of Ben McKelvie and Gary Francis got us started with the ball and a very tidy start it was. Maw Haws openers, Nathan Smith and Phil King struggled to get going against some very tight lines and a swinging ball. Gaz picked up the wicket of Nathan in the 4th over who was bowled for 7. That brought Craig Harrison to the crease and with his classy leaves off Gaz, was looking like he was in for the long haul. Fortunately for us that wasn't to be as Ben removed him in the next over caught behind by Chris Carlton-Bishop (Eric Albert Forman). Phil must have decided that with the 2 quick wickets it was time to start making some runs. The 4s and 6s started to flow and the score shot out to around 67/2 before he was caught going big off the bowling of Jason Bary for an impressive 49. The Maw Haws middle order wasn't up for the quality bowling Bloomfield had on display and the wickets started to fall. Trout and Jason took another wicket each before Randy came to the crease and bowled both Richard Brosnan and Saul Bishara.

Putting our best fielder at short fine leg the whole match then paid big dividends with Craig Trim making 2 direct hit run-outs in a row. That left Maw Haws in a right pickle at 119/9. It was about this time that things really started to fall apart for us. Simon Verschaffelt started hitting runs and Jimmy Hislop refused to touch a ball that wasn't hitting the stumps. Unfortunately for us our bowlers had no reply and the Maw Haws rear guard stacked on the runs. I don't know how long it took to get the final wicket but it felt like a lifetime. Eventually Gaz came up with the wicket of Jimmy Hislop but the damage had been done and Maw Haws had gotten themselves out of jail, ending their innings at 158 all out. Simon Verschaffelt remained not out on a well-earned 46.

Glennis is in the other team now so I think this is the only photo.

Something about hushing a salmon?

Our batting innings got off to a pretty good start with Bishtopher looking steady and Jason Bary going big, hitting 3 4s before getting bowled for 14. Trout then came to the crease and looked in full control leaving well and navigating some very good bowling. Another 17 runs were added to our score before Bishtopher was caught by Saul Bishara. (We may never know who bowled it). It was at this point things went downhill for us. Only 2 batsmen hung around for any length of time after Trout was caught and bowled by Simon. The rest came and went. Anthony Doyle in his first game for Bloomfield was looking all class as his teammates flailed around him. Once Anthony was eventually out, stumped, James McKelvie in his first game for Bloomfield put on a nice little display to make the deficit not look quite as bad, before he was caught on the boundary at cow corner, out for 14. Bloomfield finishing 29 runs short of the target at 130/10

A bit of a disappointing start to the season to have a quality team such as Maw Haws on the ropes only to let them off the hook with a poor 2nd innings. A lot of positives to pull from the game as well though and we will be looking forward to playing Freyberg next weekend.

MVP- Randy 3, Jase 2, Craig Trim 1.

Accelerate Automotive Bloomfield P4 VS PNBHS 4th XI

In our first game for the season we were up against Boy’s High 4th XI who had played played no pre-season cricket at all.

In his first game as captain Craig lost the toss and were put into the field. We opened the bowling with George Taura and our new club member Bevan Catley. George was near unplayable as he bowled to his field which included Steve and Glennis in the slips. Then up for his first over in Bloomfield colours Bevan bowled well and got his first wicket for the club and the opening bowlers were making easy pickings of the top order.

The first bowling change saw Captain Craig come on and bowl well and putting more pressure on the batsmen. Zach took over at the other end and with some tight lines and a good length saw the Boys High score almost come to a halt.

Rowan had 2 run outs and was in the wickets with the ball in hand and then George came back on to finish the innings. Boys High all out for 88 and a great bowling and fielding display from a newly developed Bloomfield team.

So with the target set, Captain Craig had a team talk and made sure we brought the required emphasis and confidence to the chase.

George and Rowan got our innings out to a solid start but other than losing a couple of wickets 88 was never going to be enough especially as we were gifted 27 extras and we chased down the total in 22 overs. It is also worth pointing out that Greg faceplanted the pitch while trying to run a single. We hope he is recovering well from his emotional damage and will be back next week better than ever.

Great team performance and look forward to next week.

MVP- Rowan 3, Zach 2, Nathan 1

Both Bloomfield teams meet after the matches for the fine session.
