Metalfold Industries Premier 3 vs Manawatu/Foxton CC
Saturday the 20th of January at Manawaroa 3
Captain Trout was away for our match against Manawatu/Foxton at Manawaroa 3, so Benjamin was given the role of captain for the day. Starting off well he won the toss and decided to have a bat. This decision was made easier with both opening batsmen backing the call with statements like “I’m going to score a century” and “Mate, I’ve got runs in me today, I can feel it”. Perhaps that last one was misunderstood? It didn’t take long for us to see that Manawaroa 3 was going to be a great batting deck. Unfortunately, that didn’t help our openers with Jase going out caught in the 2nd over for 4, falling for an obvious trap laid by Scott McGhie, And Bish out caught behind for 2 in the 3rd over.

At 6 for 2 you could be forgiven for thinking it might have been a day to bowl first but if you thought that then you clearly forgot about Chicken or, in this case, Big Tuna. (Its easy to do, he’s only little) Big Tuna strolled out to the crease and as ever I must use my memory to describe the batting masterclass that followed because the absolute crap that is PLAYHQ won’t give me the details. Between him and Kurtis they combined to rotate the strike consistently and put the bad balls to the fence. That was until Kurtis copped a ball from Scott McGhie that turned about 2 feet from outside off and removed his leg pin. That didn’t ruin Big Tunas vibe though as he continued to score with Tyler looking solid early on. After a good little period, Tyler could no longer control his inner demons and was tempted to chase a ball from Jack Brown. This proved to be his undoing as he skyed it and was out caught for 8.
That brought Grumpy Smiler to the crease. After good scores in his previous 2 matches, he was looking to go a step further. A lucky break being dropped on the boundary helped his cause considerably and he plundered boundaries all around the park on his way to 50. Big Tunas time had finally come though and it was via the man that had troubled him all day. A miss timed shot had him caught for 41 by Andrew Laird on the long on boundary during a masterful spell of bowling by Jack Brown. SukhYEET Singh replaced Big Tuna at the crease and in his first game back for 2024 he batted his way through to a solid 22 before being bowled by Jack Brown. Zach, Ben, Gaz and Glennis all got to have a bit of a bat once Grumpy finally went out for 81, caught off the bowling of Faisal Khan. Bloomfield batting out their overs 246/9.

Ben and Gaz opened the bowling although in Ben’s case ‘bowling’ is more of an abstract term. Once both openers were removed the plundering began. Scott Finlayson smashed Ben all over the ground but found Gaz’s line outside off a little more troublesome. The batting practice Ben was giving him at the other end must have helped him get his eye in because he started opening up on Gaz. It was a last-minute field change and Gaz’s cutter that combined to finally stop the rampage with Scott driving one straight down Zach’s throat at long-off. His 49 from 21 stand set Foxton up nicely in their chase. Unfortunately for ManFox, no one else was able to significantly impact the target as Jase, Sukh and Kurtis ground out the remaining batsman, bowling Foxton out for 116. Kurtis’ 4 wickets of his 8 overs highlighting our innings with the ball.
